LIFE SCIENCE - CHAPTER 2C

Chapter 2C is about the classification of living organisms.  Here is the link for the Power Point.

We are also working on a Living Kingdoms Notebook or Power Point.  We discussed the project in class and each student received the instructions.  There is a place for the parents' signature that needs to be returned tomorrow.   Here is a link for the instructions.

If you have any questions, please email me or send in a note.  This is a big project, but the benefits have been communicated to me by students after they have graduated.  They say that they were able to use what they learned about taxonomy doing this project.  However, they also learned how to research, which was even more valuabl

I'm looking forward to seeing their best, creative work!

CHAPTER 19 - ELEMENTS OF WEATHER

On Friday, February 6, we did some simple air pressure experiments.

This first video shows that increased pressure causes the air in the dropper to contract.  That makes the water level in the dropper to increase to the point that the dropper sinks because it is more dense.

We also discussed Bernoulli's effect.  A moving fluid (air) will cause a low pressure area.  Substances will move toward a high pressure into a low pressure.  The slip of paper moves up into the low pressure created by the moving air above it.

These "Kissing Balloons" illustrate Bernoulli's effect as well.

CHAPTER 18 POWER POINTS

We have finished our space exploration study, and we are beginning a new section.  We will be studying meteorology for the next few weeks.  The first chapter covers the atmosphere.

Happy New Year!

As we finish up our study of space exploration, we will be learning about manned space flight.  We will talk about the race to the moon, space stations, and the space shuttle.

Here are the Google Drive links for the three Power Points for this section.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

The eighth grade had the privilege of delivering our Operation Christmas Child boxes to the drop-off church, Lakeside Presbyterian, in West Palm Beach.  We delivered 122 boxes from our church and school.  We paused with the ladies at the drop-off point to pray over our boxes.  We prayed that the boxes would reach many with the love of Jesus.  It is awesome to consider what God can do with our simple gifts!

SPACE EXPLORATION

How many things do you use daily that are a direct result of technology developed by the US Space Program?

Here is a cool video about spin-offs from NASA research and development.

NASA SPIN-OFF VIDEO

Have you chosen your topic for your next mini-project?  It can be anything about unmanned space exploration, rockets, or telescopes.  Try something different for your presentation.  Be creative!

I have put the vocabulary for Chapter 25 A & B into Quizlet for you to review.

COSTUME PARADE - EIGHTH GRADE MENTORING PROGRAM

The eighth grade and the three-year-old class had a great day together on October 24th.  We participated in some games, crafts, and the parade.  We also ate pizza together.  Each three-year-old student began to get acquainted with their adopted eighth grader.  We look forward to our next time together - November 20th for Thanksgiving Dinner.

EARTHQUAKE

Now that this blog is available to the students on their IPads, I will be using it more and more.

We are finished studying volcanoes.  I am very pleased with many of the essays that the students wrote as part of their chapter tests.  We will be working even more on writing excellent science essays.

Our next unit of study will be about earthquakes.  Here is the link for the first Power Point on Chapter 6A.  I will upload the others soon.

Earth Science Chapter 6A

We had a great time on our field trip to the Kravis Theater.  We saw a one-man play about the Apollo missions to the moon.  It was fun and informative.  In the lobby, the South Florida Science Museum had some experiments for the students to try.

I also wanted to share a video that Abigail Perree created for her volcano project.  (This is a Youtube link and may not open on your school IPad.)

CONVECTION EXPERIMENTS

We continue our study of the basic concepts in earth science with the process of convection.  Convection is defined as the movement of molecule caused by heating.

This photo shows convection in a glass plate.  The blue water was ice cold; the red water was hot. They moved around the plate forming this convection cell.  If it looks like a hurricane on a weather map, that is not a coincidence.  The same forces are at work in forming cyclonic storms.

The next two videos show a demonstration called The Fountain.  The flask, with a little water, is heated.  As it heats, the air expands and pushes its way out of the tube leaving a semi-vacuum in the flask.  Then the flask was inverted in ice water (purple).   The water at first climbs up the tube slowly to replace the slowly cooling and contracting air.  When the ice water hits the air, the air contracts suddenly and violently pulls the water into the flask.

(Thank you, Bailey, for making the video for me.  You did a great job.)

This is your assignment for tonight.  Watch this video of Steve Spangler doing an experiment that is very similar to one that we did.

Answer these questions:

1.  To which of our experiments was this experiment similar?

2.  How is his experiment similar?

3.  What did he do different, or in addition to, our experiment?

4.  How was the result of the second of the additional experiment different?

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Our Lady Crusaders played an awesome match against Trinity this afternoon.  Our girls won in two games.  I was so impressed by their cooperation on the court.  Their serving was fantastic.  I am so proud of "my" girls!

EARTH SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS

The students have been learning the physical laws that we will be using in earth science this year.  They have been using mnemonic charts to study and memorize the laws.  We have had experiments in class to demonstrate the concepts.
The first set of experiments demonstrated the molecular movement of substance at differing temperatures.  Here are Olivia Carrino and Bailey Moss assisting me with an experiment called, "Mix It Up."

The second set of experiments demonstrated the relative densities of substances.  We made a rainbow with liquids of different densities.

Then I made a "Genie in a Bottle" using hot and cold water.

The last experiment dealt with a "Mysterious Candle," that really ended up to be "Mysterious Medium!."
The size of the candle did not effect its density, but it floated in the water and sank in the alcohol because of the differing densities of the liquids.

I'm looking forward to a lot more experiments and experiences this year.

See you at PTF meeting, Monday, September 15th, 7 P.M.

AM I READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL?

My bulletin boards are up.  My room is clean.  My lesson plans are done.  My Power Points are up-loaded. I've prayed for each student.  I think I'm ready....

It's been an unusual summer for me.  I did not take an exciting trip across country or a cruise.  In fact, I didn't get any farther than Sanibell Island for four days.  However, I have had an incredible summer getting to know my grandchildren better than ever.  I have seen God's healing hand on my step-daughter, Elissa.  I've had a little time to read and paint.  I even pulled my camera back out this week.

Summer is grand - but I'm ready to go back to what I love best, teaching.  Are you ready?

COOKIE DOUGH SALE SUCCESS

I am so proud of the eighth grade and their participation in our cookie dough fund-raiser!  We raised almost $1400!  Thanks to each and everyone who bought and sold cookie dough.

Remember - next Thursday is our Silpada Jewelry party for all the moms.  It was be at Sandie Hippler's house.  Contact me if you need details.

I look forward to celebrating Veteran's Day with a very special program tomorrow.  Don't forget to wear your red, white, and blue.  If you are setting up, serving, greeting, or cleaning up after the breakfast tomorrow, remember to be in the cafeteria early.

TRUTH PROJECT AT LPBS

Parents and middle school students have an opportunity to join us for this unique learning experience sponsored by Focus on the Family.  If you have never heard of the Truth Project, please click on the icon below to watch a short video.

We will be viewing one of the videos in the church sanctuary on a Tuesday of each month. (A complete schedule is available in the office.) The first showing will be this Tuesday (September 21st) at 3:15 PM and last about an hour.  This information will help you and your student when faced with conflicting world views and moral situations.  The study goes along with what we have been learning in our science class about faith and science, and I am strongly encouraging my students to attend.

Please join us for the video and time of discussion.

See you tomorrow!
